The RIF Commercial I remember
The Reason I read.
Today, I walked into the Flatlands branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and saw a xerox copy of a sign that said" as of August 31, 2012 the Reading is fundamental (RIF) program will have been defunded by the federal government. I pretty much blew a gasket, I took a photo and started posting that this program over 35 years had given away 1 million books.
I remember the book the kid took in the commercial, it's title was "I AM SOMEBODY!".
Most children today think that they are somebody due to what they own and not by what they know. This idea they carry around goes to the heart of the problem of education and critical thinking.
How can a kid grow up to be anything or imagine a better circumstance for him or herself if the system of education promotes this sense of self not from within but by what you layer on your carcass.
